COALITION GOVERNMENT’S CUTS WILL INCLUDE MINISTERS’ CHAUFFEUR DRIVEN CARS

November 8th, 2010

Just shortly after the long scandal of the expenses fiddle that has been practiced by many a government’s minister, we find another loophole where these very same ministers have been lashing out on an unnecessary luxury at the expense of the British taxpayer; chauffeur driven saloon cars around London and the home counties.

Official figures show a total of just under £7000000.00 ( seven million sterling pounds) being spent by the last government headed by Gordon Brown on chauffeur driven cars in and around the city of London. And increase by up to half a million sterling pounds from the year before.

The former business secretary, Lord Mandelson has been named and shamed as the worst offender, with a bill of up to £694,236. This was for the use of up to seven cars with drivers. Alan Johnson’s home office not far behind him in second place spending an amount of £514,593.

Ed Balls’ education department spent £489,000 on six cars, while his wife, Yvette Cooper, and her work and pensions department racked up £506,000. The Cabinet Office, which provided support for Gordon Brown, paid £362,790.

The cars used were not even of any expensive type such as the Mercedes Benz S class, BMW 7 series or Audi A8 but were in fact the low carbon emissions Toyota Prius and so on which begs the questions of how much the government were being charged for these chauffeur driven saloons

“Ministers have now been ordered to use public transport whenever possible to lighten the general feeling aimed at the government by the taxpaying public.

Listeners from the London Chauffeur industry discussing this topic with Petri Hoskin of LBC radio were discussed with these figures which were more than extravagant especially when the vehicles used where not of the expensive Mercedes Benz S class type and said that for that amount of money the government could run their own London chauffeur company and still make a big profit.

BARCLAYS BICYCLE SCHEME SET TO KILL OFF THE LONDON BLACK CAB AND TAXI TRADE

November 3rd, 2010

Launched in July 2010, the Mayor’s London Cycle scheme has been a success story from day one. With the few teething problems that were expected at the start now being resolved, the London Mayor’s cycle scheme backed by Barclays bank can only become better. Not so though for the London Black cabs and Taxi trade who are thought to be suffering more and more due to more Taxi passengers opting out for the Bicycles. The cycle scheme initiated by the ex Mayor Ken Livingstone has started with about 5000 bikes, 315 docking stations spread around the major parts of London’s city centre and going into as many as eight London Boroughs. With more docking stations and bikes set to be included in the scheme, it will become a more available way of transport for passengers who normally use the London Taxis and red buses. Within the first ten weeks of launching the scheme, about one million cycle journeys have taken place and these have would have been otherwise done mainly in London’s black cabs. The figures are there to prove that a lot of users are likely to be the affluent city of London workforce judging by the high volume of usage between the hours of 08:30-09:30 AM and 17:30-18:30 Monday to Friday. With some docking stations turning over as little as 8 bikes and some as many as 200 per 24 hours more organising needs to be put in place but thanks to a software similar to the one used in the Paris cycling scheme this will not be too difficult to master.

The Paris scheme which is called Velib and a similar one in Lyon France with the name of VeloV have both proved to be a success in these French cities.

London Chauffeur Companies have not noticed any drop in their workload due to this scheme because passengers who use chauffeur driven cars in London do so for various reasons and cannot replace their ground transportation methods to something as a black cab, Taxi or buses and tubes.

It remains to be seen what action the London Taxi and Black Cab drivers associations will take to try to bring this low carbon emissions scheme to an end for their own benefit as they have done with issues such as the bus stops, London airport pick up points and booths for private hire drivers and chauffeurs and signage on all the London minicabs and chauffeur driven cars.

PICK UP AT LONDON HEATHROW AIRPORT

October 27th, 2010

London taxis and private hire vehicles including minicabs and chauffeur driven sedans are responsible for keeping the city of London on the move, what with all the city finance and investments personnel that they carry in and out of the city of London’s square mile every day 365 day a year. Yet as much as these drivers and chauffeurs make life easier and bring in the money literally to the city, they get a hard time from every which way they could think of. The PCO, Police and traffic wardens to mention but a few are some of the authoritative agencies that can make life that little harder or indeed easier for the London taxi and chauffeur companies. But the last organisation one would think could be harassing the ground transportation establishments in London and to be precise at Europe’s busiest commercial airport, London Heathrow , is BAA or otherwise known as British Airports Authority.

For years the private hire industry has been “getting away” with picking up their passengers at the drop off points of the main terminals at London Heathrow airport.

Now BAA has decided to tighten their squeeze on the forecourts at London Heathrow airport (LHR) and decided that instant tickets are to be issued by Heathrow police for waiting at the drop off points. The charge of the airport car park is normally added to the passengers flying into LHR and some of those do not see why they should be inconvenienced and pay for it since they have a very busy schedule and their day is measured in minutes and seconds. What BAA should do here at London Heathrow airport and any other airports they own and operate is to put up a short stay pick up rank for those few chauffeurs who get called by their clients as they are walking out of the terminal for a quick exit. This practice will save the client some money and time and also save thousands of working hours of minicab drivers and chauffeurs and the travelling public. If this is not implemented soon then maybe we will be witnessing big scale demonstrations with taxi drivers and minicab drivers blocking the main airport terminals which will be the mother of all the congestions.  Check out  chauffeur service

CRIMES AROUND THE LONDON PRIVATE HIRE AND TAXI TRADE

October 26th, 2010

More and more do we hear of attacks on the minicab drivers of London and as much as we read about it month in month out in the private hire trade magazines circulating in London and indeed the wider United Kingdom but there seems to be little done about protecting the victims; the drivers.

Two thieves tracked…………….

By a tracking device called PDA. Now how stupid and uneducated must these thieves have been not to know that this device is a smart piece of technology that minicab and taxi drivers in London are relying on to find their way and also so their companies can see where they are. The thieves held a knife to the throat of the driver of the minicab and got only £17.00 in cash and his mobile phone which also served as the device connected to the Hanwell minicab firm’s offices via satellite. The London Metroplolitan police managed to follow every move of the thieves and arrested them almost immediately to the astonishment of one of them who could only manage to utter the words: “how did you find us” ? This must be worst than leaving the passport at the scene of a crime.

Gun-shot victim refused a cab ride…………..

The driver who was asked to take the victim to hospital allegedly stated that it is against the law to take the teenager who was shot in the face by a cyclist passing by to the hospital and that he had to wait for a London ambulance driver to arrive at the scene to attend to the shrapnel that was embedded in the cheek of the teenager. Further enquiries and fact finding are being held by the London Metropolitan police.

Attack on minicab driver in Esher, Surrey……………………

The London Metropolitan Police are looking for witnesses believed to be two women who may be able to identify up to three men who attacked a lone taxi driver outside a public house in Esher High Street. It is said that one of the three men is seen walking away from the scene before the incident but the other two got involved in an argument with the taxi driver which ended up in an assault on him. The police have released the CCTV footage available from the scene of the crime and are hoping the two women identified on the tape will come forward to give evidence. It is said that the two women were actually seen intervening on the footage so it will be important to establish if they were connected to the culprits or indeed to the Surrey taxi driver. A man said to be in his 40s was arrested and suspicion of assault and later released. Visit Chauffeur London Services

LAUNCH OF THE NEW MERCEDES BENZ VIANO (PEOPLE CARRIER) FOR CHAUFFEURS

October 21st, 2010

The Mercedes Benz Chauffeur programme which was introduced in July 2010 is going from strength to strength. With the new Mercedes Benz S Class Blue Efficiency seen chauffeur driven everywhere in the city of London since its launch in 2009, many more chauffeur driven Mercedes Benz E class vehicles appearing on the roads of Britain especially going backwards and forwards for those airport transfers between London and the major surrounding airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted and now finally the launch of the second generation Mercedes Benz Viano (people carrier), a car that has changed the course of motoring history since its introduction in 2004. The word Viano was the new word for MPV or people carrier and most chauffeured clients would not accept any other car that was around prior to the introduction of the Viano, not even popular chauffeur driven cars such as the Chrysler Grand Voyager. The Mercedes Benz Viano even replaced another category of chauffeur driven car, certainly here in the city of London , and that was the Mercedes Benz E class limousine (Pullman).

Now that we are just 4 weeks away from actually seeing the new Viano on the streets of London and the wider UK, it remains to be seen if this legend of a car will be bought up by so many chauffeurs, owner drivers and companies alike or if it will take some time for that to happen being that the look of the Viano has changed so little and is almost unrecognisable from its predecessor. Mercedes Benz say that a lot of the improvements on the new vehicle are as a direct result of the Stuttgart based car manufacturer listening to their market; the chauffeurs.

Mercedes Benz Corporate are due to showcase their new Viano at the LPHCA (Licensed Private Hire Car Association) AGM and Roadshow held at London Heathrow’s Marriott Hotel on Bath road and will also be on hand to answer any questions regarding the Mercedes Benz Chauffeur Programme which will include the very attractive lease deals on both the Mercedes Benz E and S class that are competing head to head with other manufacturers lease deals such as the BMW’s chauffeured 7 series and 5 series and Audi”s all new A8L which is has a monthly rental price starting from only £675.00.

Mercedes Benz is ahead of the rest on the chauffeur driven people carrier market since none of the other manufacturers such as Jaguar,BMW,Audi or Lexus are building one. Visit London Chauffeur.

VIANO / VITO IS THE NEW LONDON TAXI (BLACK CAB)

October 14th, 2010

Gone is the red London telephone box, the London bobby’s hat and the Double Decker London bus and now it seems another iconic British and London landmark is threatened of extinction. Yes, the London Taxi (Black Cab) will soon be a thing of the past.

For Mercedes Benz and KPM-UK, a subsidiary arm of Ecocity Vehicles PLC have recently signed an exclusive deal to launch a new style London cab based on the Mercedes Benz Vito Travelliner or otherwise commonly known as the Mercedes Benz Viano people carrier. This collaboration will end the monopoly that LTI Vehicles Coventry has enjoyed since the manufacture of the other London taxi, the Metrocab, has been discontinued. The new Taxi was revealed in London and received a lot of approval even from the most hardened critics in the industry; the taxi driver.

The new Vito / Viano has been approved by the London licensing authority the Public Carriage Office (PCO) and has complied with the London Conditions of Fitness regulations applied by the PCO to the London black cabs (taxis). Two of these regulations are the wheelchair accessibility and the 25 feet turning point which is necessary for the small London streets. Whether the recognisability of the Vito / Viano as a London taxi will be an issue especially when there are a lot of private hire vehicles used by the London chauffeur companies remains to be seen. A suggestion would be to have the word taxi written on the side of the new style black cabs and to fit a larger than usual illuminated taxi sign on the front of the cab.

This will see the Mercedes Benz taxi competing head to head with the conventional London taxi the TX4 and the Vito / Viano is strong contender and alternative for use as a licensed taxi in London and elsewhere in the UK. Think of it as standard taxi supplied with the reliability, the prestige, cost-effectiveness and safety that is naturally the expected from a Mercedes-Benz car.

The new Mercedes Benz taxi (Vito / Viano) has superb comfort for both the passengers and the cab driver and this is combined with superior fuel economy as acclaimed by a lot of the new drivers of the Vito Taxi licensed in London. This taxi is a six-seater as opposed to five seater and affords more luggage space than other cabs, the Mercedes Vito Taxi has a long list of ‘extras as standard’ : metallic paint, electric steps, front and rear air conditioning, electrically operated passenger doors on both sides, front and rear Parktronic (parking sensors), ABS, driver’s airbag, leather driver’s seat , and much, much more. Try out the new Mercedes Vito Taxi today!

  • Spacious drivers cockpit
  • Passenger lighting, heating and intercom control
  • Electric side steps and wheelchair ramp
  • Tight turning circle
  • Parking sensors (Parktronic)
  • ABS braking system
  • ESP stability programme
  • (BAS) Brake assist system
  • (EBV) Electronic brake force distribution
  • (ASR) Acceleration Skid Control

THE GMB UNION DEFENDS PRIVATE HIRE DRIVER’ RIGHTS

October 12th, 2010

Once again the professional driver’s branch of the GMB union’s London based representative, Mr Terry Flanagan finds himself in a signature confrontation with the owner of one of the London based minicab, courier and car service companies.

The issue: are the London minicab drivers and chauffeurs employed or self employed?

You may find that even today there are some cab companies in London that still “employ” their private hire drivers and make the necessary PAYE contributions to the Inland Revenue’s collector of taxes but the majority of chauffeurs and minicab drivers alike are considered to be self employed and therefore the normal employment rules do not apply.

Are the private hire licensees employed? or are they self employed ? This is the big question that the Inland Revenue seems to be unable to answer and would rather just accept the status quo as it is because they (HMRC) themselves don’t have all the answers and it is easier to ignore the problem especially because it concerns the UK private hire/taxi trade which has always been considered as a last resort job option industry and the people working in it have always been treated like third class citizens by the authorities including the licensing agencies across the United Kingdom especially in England and Wales. Private hire and minicab drivers as well as chauffeurs work as employees in all but title yet they can suffer the worst of both worlds. The bosses at the minicab firms dictate the hours the drivers have to work especially in a city like London where the competition amongst minicabs and taxi firms is so fierce driving the prices down and resulting in lack of quality. This is slightly different in the chauffeur industry due to chauffeurs being more professional in their approach to their job and are at the top of their game unlike the car service and minicab part of the industry.

There are many questions that need to be asked here and more to the point that need to be answered when it comes to the private hire industry (minicab, car and chauffeur service) and the issue of employment. Why do the authorities (HMRC) not do anything about this to put this issue to bed once and for all? Also, why do the GMB union find it easy to pick on the big targets and pretend this is not happening at the smaller firms where there are hardly any records kept for a lot of drivers for the one reason that these drivers want to stay out of sight and out of mind avoiding paying any taxes and also claiming all the benefits they can get their hands on which is one of the major issues that the government is trying to tackle. The suggestion would be that all the different agencies involved (PCO,GMB,Immigration,Inland Revenue and DWP) would start to open the communication channels and work much closer together in order to achieve acceptable results. This should bring some respectability back to the industry by cleaning all the excess illegal workforce out once and for all and therefore drive the prices at some firms back up resulting in the drivers not needing to work long hours which is one of the very things the GMB union is trying to tackle. LONDON BLACK CABS AND TAXI DRIVERS TARGET CENTRAL LONDON NIGHTCLUBS AND VENUES

August 1st, 2010

Chauffeur Service: The Taxi and Black Cab drivers of London have been accused of falsely writing letters of complaints to the managers of some of the London VIP nightclubs and bars with pretending to be a disgruntled client who used the car service outside these venues and were not happy with the legally PCO (Public Carriage Office) licensed driver.

The London Taxi trade are hoping that the managers of these VIP clubs and bars would kick out the chauffeurs who are working for reputable and licensed London car companies to be replacing them with the official London Taxis (Black Cabs).

A Private Hire Trade magazine in London has been able to view one of the e-mails in which this London Taxi Driver was using bad language and calling the drivers of the car service illegal minicabs and touts.

To the dismay of the London Taxi driver who wrote this e-mail, the owner of the minicab and car service is actually a good friend of the owner of the posh restaurant this complaint was sent to and the two gentlemen discussed this and concluded that this e-mail was sent by a London Taxi driver. Visit London Chauffeur, Wedding Transport in UK.

Looking into this further, the owner of the London chauffeur an car service along with the manager of the VIP club and restaurant discovered on a London Taxi Trade Forum (www.londontaxiforum.co.uk) that there is a campaign being organised by some of the London Black Cab and Taxi drivers to discredit the private hire industry including minicabs, car service and chauffeurs.

The campaign has been reported to the PCO (Public Carriage Office) who are looking into this further and the outcome once again will be a black point against the London Hackney trade’s Taxi drivers.

It is worth mentioning that most of the VIP nightclubs and bars in London are using car service companies who supply them with chauffeur driven Mercedes Benz S class sedans and Mercedes Benz E class saloons because the party goers at these venues prefer the comfort of such saloons and the professional attitude of the London cars service and chauffeurs which is a rarity in the Taxi trade.

Passenger Etiquette Is Important When Opting For Chauffeur Car Hire

January 28th, 2009

We all know the ‘customer is always right’ quote. This is in general true, yet there is logical and ethical behaviour that is expected of clients as well. When you wish to make use of a chauffeur car hire service this holds true.

Your chauffeur is a highly skilled professional who will see to your comfort and safety while transporting you. You as the passenger have to abide by certain common rules as well for the relationship between driver and passenger to be sound.

Logic must prevail

Your chauffeur driven car is a moving vehicle on a public road. All the UK rules of the road must be followed at all times. You may not obstruct your driver in any way through irresponsible behaviour or commit any illegal act while being driven in the vehicle.

It is your driver’s job to make sure that you do not harm yourself or endanger the lives of others. If stopped by the police for any reason the driver may allow the police to search the entire vehicle. If the driver feels that any activity is untoward within the vehicle he may contact the police via his mobile phone.

As the passenger you must remember that your driver could have his licence revoked if he allows any illegal or dangerous behaviour to take place inside the vehicle. If your behaviour becomes out of control your driver may pull over and have you duly removed. These measures are for your own safety and the safety of other road users as well as your driver.
